My first game of '08

Here's my game from Tuesday night. I played a kid, but he's rated 100 points higher than me. I thought I did a decent job with the queenless middlegame.

This is also my first forray with using Chess Publisher. It looks good so far.

My notes are from my own thoughts after the game, with no computer help. That's another resolution for 2008; to analyze my tournament games without an engine first, then to check it with Rybka et. al.

  • Thanks for posting. Although I was sitting next to you, I was too busy losing my own game to see how yours finished.

Actually, I lost my game in somewhat similar fashion - too much pawn hunting with an exposed king.

  • Thanks for reading!

Yeah, I always look at the games going on around me, but never remember anything about them. I keep telling myself to pay attention to what openings people play, but I never do :)

I suppose that's a good sign, that I'm actually concentrating on my own game (yeah right...).

  • Although You got the full point, there was a couple fo times you could have ended his misery sooner.

All i kept thinking was " ... and from here its just a matter of technique!" How many times we've read that obscurity in a book?

    Good game.

  • Matt, this publisher isnt bad, does it allow variations as well? I think I need to get into this bloging business as I have a lot of cool and instructive material.

  • I'm always telling my students NOT to watch the games around them. Pay attention to own game! Though at times the other games are more interesting then our own.

  • BP: Thanks. Yeah, when I get a winning game I tend to think of the immortal words of astronaut Alan Sheppard, "Please dear God, don't let me f^&k up."

Ilya: I'll try some games out with variations. The trick is getting the PGN right. I think you might have to click on the initial move of the variation though. No popup windo like in Chessbase.

Poly: That's good advice, but I can't help it! I like watching chess games. Sometimes I find myself deeply engrossed in a K+Q vs. K game way down on board umpity-ump and can't stop watching it.

    Chess is fun.

  • I'm guilty of that too, especially when my game is boring and some other game is much more interesting. :-)

  • Personally, I love losing to kids. Perhaps it's because my daughter beats me every single time we play - but she's brilliant and I am not...plus she's my daughter. But still, it's wonderful to see young people playing chess, and playing it well. If I have to be a ritual sacrifice on their way to affirmation of their brilliance, so be it.
