A couple of weeks ago I experienced one of the ultimate dreams of a tournament chessplayer; I executed a smothered mate in an actual tournament game. I was playing Black in the position shown. I uncorked:

17... f4!
18. h3 fxe3!
19. hxg4 exf2+
20. Rxf2 Rxf2
21. Kxf2 Nxg4+
22. Kg1 Qe3+
23. Kh1 Nf2+
24. Kh2 Be5+
25. Kg1 Nh3++
26. Kh1 Qg1+
27. Rxg1 Nf2#
